The TSC has been
looking for new and exciting destinations.
BANSKO, BULGARIA certainly fits the bill.
Ski Europe, with
whom the TSC has had a long relationship, and TUI, the
largest travel company in the world, are working closely
with us to ensure that our first venture into “uncharted
waters” will be one of great adventure, wonderful
excursions, great value and opportunities that have never
before been presented to us.
Having just
returned from the site inspection, I can tell you that this
is a trip not to be missed. Bulgaria is doing a wonderful
job of coming back from over 700 years of dominance from
outside forces. There is still some physical evidence of the
Russian dominance – buildings and roads but this is seen
mainly in the large cities. The Bulgarian people have never
lost themselves or their pride of country. They are warm,
friendly and eager to please. Many speak English.
Bansko, the ski
village of about 10,000, is small and very easy to get
around. The hotels are well located and are certainly equal
to if not above the European standard. Most hotels are less
than 5 years old! Food and wine are in abundance and a great
value. There are nearly 100 mehanas (taverns/restaurants)
located throughout the town. There is a walking street where
most of the shops are located.
The base of the
mountain (3000 feet) is at the edge of town and within
walking distance of most hotels. All hotels have shuttles
to/from the gondola which is the only way to access the
mountain. There are over 40 miles of runs accessible by 14
chair lifts. Chip-card ski passes are wonderful! You never
have to take it out of your pocket or have it hanging from
your clothing! There are 3 restaurants areas on mountain
with wonderful food and wine served by waiters. A typical
lunch for 2 including a bottle of wine will be less than
$20. At days end you can take the 10 mile run to the base or
download on the gondola. Elevation at the top is 8500 feet.
